After a daughter witnesses her father having an affair, she begins a chain reaction that could tear her family apart.

With raw, harrowing honesty, photographer-filmmaker Khalik Allah explores the complex relationship between artist and subject as he reflects on his friendship with a homeless addict living on the streets of Harlem.

A Brooklyn teenager juggles conflicting identities and risks friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression.

Set in the Watts area of Los Angeles, a slaughterhouse worker must suspend his emotions to continue working at a job he finds repugnant, and then he finds he has little sensitivity for the family he works so hard to support.

A short film of interviews and protests at a rally to free Huey P. Languid look at the Gullah culture of the sea islands off the coast of South Carolina and Georgia where African folk-ways were maintained well into the 20th Century and was one of the last bastions of these mores in America.

Set in Besides being visually gorgeous to look at, I am having trouble finding positive things to say about Julie Dash's Daughters of the Dust.

My biggest problem with understanding Daughters of the Dust was the continuity. Obviously there was no change of costume, there was only the one meal, and no one ever seemed to have slept, so this would make me think that it all takes place in one day.

However, because of the poor continuity in editing, when the film was over I really found myself guessing what was going on. It must have been difficult shooting where they did, St.

Helena Island, and with a smaller budget, but the frequent change of sunlight really threw me off. I'm not just talking about the storm scenes, but towards the end of the film it seems like they had trouble with clouds moving in and out.

It also seemed like some of the last shots were edited together without paying much attention to the lighting changes.

Also, along with continuity editing, characters disappeared and reappeared extremely infrequently. For example, the American Indian that was seeing Iona just took off towards the beginning of the film, and we don't see him again until the last few minutes of the film.

It wasn't just this side story that we were given little insight into, but all characters. Instead of letting us deep inside of fewer characters and their lives, we were exposed to several characters, and we were given very little insight into who they were.

This kept the film very shallow and somewhat meaningless for me. I couldn't find any sort of central plot. There were several little sub plots, that didn't go very far, and all ended with the splitting of the family into those who stayed on the island and those who went to the mainland.

And then we're cut off. All we know is they never see each other again. So, we're given little to no plot, no deep or meaningful insight into the characters, and a rather abrupt and unsatisfying ending.

I'd argue that Daughters of the Dust is a poetic film before ever calling it a narrative. The film had a poetic feel to it, with the beautiful scenery, the language used, and especially the music.

That horrible harp music that was constantly repeated over and over again could be interpreted as poetic. However, the African tribal music that was used was also very poetic sounding, exotic and rhythmically speaking.

Nana Peazant Alva Rogers Eula Peazant Barbarao Yellow Mary Trula Hoosier Trula Umar Abdurrahamn Bilal Muhammad Adisa Anderson Each of the principal characters represents a different view of a family heritage that, once the Peazants have dispersed throughout the North, may not survive.

Nana Peazant Cora Lee Day , the group's year-old great-grandmother and the clan's closest link to its Yoruba roots, still practices ritual magic and grieves over the demise of that tradition.

Viola Peazant Cherly Lynn Bruce is a devout Baptist who has rejected Nana's spiritualism but who brings to her Christianity a similar fervency.

Haagar Kaycee Moore , who married into the family, disparages its African heritage as "hoodoo" and eagerly anticipates assimilation into America's middle class.

Yellow Mary Barbara-O , who has returned for the celebration, is the family pariah, shunned by the other women for being a prostitute.

The most volatile conflict is between Nana's granddaughter, Eula Alva Rogers , who is pregnant, and her husband, Eli Adisa Anderson , who believes the father of the child she is carrying is a white rapist.

Through a ritual conducted by Nana, Eli eventually realizes that he is the father of the unborn daughter who serves as the film's occasional offscreen narrator.

Because the characters and their stories are not defined in conventional film-making terms, they are not always easy to follow.

The stories, instead of being related in bite-size dramatic chunks, gradually emerge out of a broad weave in which the fabric of daily life, from food preparation to ritualized remembrance, is ultimately more significant than any of the psychological conflicts that surface.

With a running time of nearly two hours, "Daughters of the Dust" is a very languidly paced film that frequently stops in its tracks simply to contemplate the wild beauty of the Sea Island landscape.

Even though the heat, insects and threat of yellow fever made the islands inhospitable to white settlement, the movie still portrays that environment, drenched in sea mist and strewn with palms, as a semi-tropical paradise and the Peazants as a blessed tribe whose independence and harmony with nature partly offsets the scars of having been slaves.

Dash, who emerges as a strikingly original film maker. For all its harsh allusions to slavery and hardship, the film is an extended, wildly lyrical meditation on the power of African cultural iconography and the spiritual resilience of the generations of women who have been its custodians.

This has been my favorite film since it was released in the theaters in I purchased the screenplay not the novel , which helped me understand the particular African signs and symbols Julie Dash uses throughout the film.

It is a remarkable piece of writing, as well as an exceptional piece of cinematography the film was made only using available light, hence the colors are warm and rich.

This film must be part of everyone's cinematic repertoire. If you were looking for a film as simple and linear as a Hollywood so-called classic, do not bother with this movie.

If you are looking for a film with visual scenes and dialogue that will remain with you and be a part of your dreams, this film is a must.

I can't surpass the perceptiveness and eloquence of his reviews four separate articles! While they have mixed feelings about the changes they've made and the changes to come -- especially contending matriarchs with abrasive and generational differences of religion -- they are a solid and venerable community, blessed rather than cursed by their relative isolation.

The other and more obvious difference with Terrence Malick is that Julie Dash's mastery went unrecognized and unrewarded for twenty-five years.

Please treat yourself to something VERY special: an old tale told in such unfamiliar terms that it feels completely new; and add your contribution to reversing Ms.

Dash's cinematic fortunes. May her name go down in history after a renewed and brilliant career. Daughters of the Dust has as much meaning for me in as it did in I come from an African Caribbean family.

My parents left their homeland in the mid's for a "better life" and returned to their island home in They took their mores with them and raised my 7 siblings and me in New York City, incorporating the values of the mainland US with their West Indian culture.

I later moved to the island of my parents and raised my daughter there. I feel blessed to have both the values of the US mainland and the culture of my West Indian heritage to share with my daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren.

Daughters of the Dust gives me insight as to how the Peazant family dealt with their desire to move on or to stay in their Sea Island homeland and how my parents and their peers dealt with the same cultural issues.

I recently shared this DVD with friends, some of whom have had the same experience as I, and some who are seeing these experiences for the first time as new and rich to them.

Daughters gets 5 stars from me! I had a copy of this movie long ago and lend it to someone and it was never returned. I cannot even remember who I lend it to.

I love learning of different cultures that always have a common thread I love watching good movies again and again because you can always find something new that you did not see before.

You can be sure that I will know who I lend this movie to in the future. I recommend this movie to anyone who loves learning and experiencing the lives of others.

You learn that we are more alike than we are different. I guarantee that you will find the common thread of All humankind I watched the first half and wasn't interested enough to continue.

No plot, little character development. There's the obvious beauty of scenes shot on the beach or characters perched in live oak trees--but it feels obvious, and that's all there is.

It's a worthy subject and the actors are believable, but overall the movie disappoints. One person found this helpful.

This movie is a tremendous resource for exploring African-American spirituality and community bonds. For students of several genres of academic inquiry it should required viewing.

The movie is excellent, but the complexity of the character relationships may require multiple viewings to fully grasp. See all reviews from the United States.

Top international reviews. I also had the honour, at that time, of interviewing the filmmaker Julie Dash.

The film is fantastic and inspired me to make a pilgrimage, with friends to the Gullah Islands. Definitely worth seeing.

One of the best films I've seen, mostly because until then most films featuring black people in the US were blaxpoitation films, or blaxploitation wannabees.

It felt good to see something directed by a woman, and that had more in common with the imagery I found in the writing of people like Gloria Naylor, Toni Morrison and Toni Cade Bambara, to name only a few.

Well done, Miss Dash! Thank you for your feedback. Sorry, we failed to record your vote. Please try again. Beautiful movie that captures the past, present, and the future in our life circle.

Great storyline and awesome cinematography! You've read the top international reviews. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item?
